Unstable Views 2024
Exhibition held in Galleria Uusi Kipinä / Kenno, Lahti, Finland 18 September to 6 October 2024

The image on the screen feels like a piece of printmaking — but it’s alive, slowly changing. Cityscapes, both familiar and unfamiliar, blend together in strange ways, merging with other landscapes and even abstract elements. There’s something dreamlike in the transformation. You’re looking at a scene, and suddenly you’re somewhere else. But wait — here’s a knob you can turn to go back to where you just were, or to jump into a completely different view.

Prints on the wall were created from the same process — glimpses of a partly abstract, dreamlike world.

On another screen, the artist’s self-portrait is looking for its shape. Different poses, expressions, and angles blend together. At times, the image is just a smudge — which is then slowly forming into recognizable, expressive features.

Views of Lahti, the city where the exhibition was held, appear in the images too. It’s my birthplace, though I moved away when I was five. What remains from early 1960s Lahti is a handful of dreamlike memories. For this exhibition, I wandered through familiar places with a camera to bring those into the dreamworld of these unstable views.
