While visiting an artist friend in Karkku (Finland), Emil became infatuated with landscapes of Pirunvuori Hill and he decided to construct his atelier there. In summer of 1906, Emil hired three strong men to construct a stone atelier in a location he had rented for 50 years. Using natural stones from the nearby boulder field (devil’s field), a building with thick walls was erected. The stones were hoisted up using a self-made crane. Stones were shaped mainly with a sledgehammer and chisel, and they were fitted together so well that no mortar was needed. Any remaining holes were filled with moss and sand. The cornerstones were bound together with iron bars.

Emil Daniellson (1882-1967) worked with his wife Saga in their stone atelier during summer for 60 years.
